Wreck of the Maheno
A major landmark of Fraser Island is the shipwreck of the S.S. Maheno. The S.S. Maheno was originally built in 1905 in Scotland as a luxury passenger ship for trans-Tasman crossings. During the First World War the ship served as a hospital ship in the English Channel, before returning to a luxury liner. In 1935, the ship was declared outdated and on 25 June 1935 the ship was being towed from Melbourne when it was caught in a strong cyclone. A few days later, on 9 July 1935 she drifted ashore and was beached on Fraser Island.
Finally, Golditas united. Endlich koennen Jovana und ich mal wieder zusammen auf Abenteurreise gehen. Wie schoen, genau wie in alten Zeiten.
Stockbrot, innen roh, aussen verbrannt, aber zum Abenteuerurlaub gehoert das einfach dazu.
Und wenns mit dem Brot nicht klappt, dann haben wir auch noch eine ziemlich gut ausgestattete Kueche im Campervan.
Mein erster Dingo, diese wildhunde sind hier zahlreich vertreten und unzaehlige Warnschilder jagen uns ganz schoen Respekt vor diesen Gesellen ein. "Stay calm, but you are fighting for your life once they attack you". Jovana schlaeft aus diesem Grund nur mit ihrem Dingo Stock im Zelt.
The island also has barrage lakes (the most famous being Lake Wabby), formed when moving sand dunes block a watercourse, and "window" lakes, formed when a depression exposes part of the regional water table.
Lake wabby wird langsam von Sandduenen verschlungen. Bis jetzt sorgen diese aber noch fuer jede Menge Spass. Mit dem Bodyboard die Duene runterduesen und direkt im Wasser landen - Toll!
Eli Creek is the largest creek on the eastern side of the island with a flow of 80 million litres of water a day.
